Strategies for Viral Adoption!

  1. Start the Change Management initiative before the Implementation is done

Many change management programs fail before they even start due to a lack of strategic discovery and planning. Ensure you’ve built the right team to manage the pending change with users and create a winning blueprint well in advance of starting the implementation. Make sure you are communicating with users well in advance of training sessions – and the rollout – to build excitement with new solutions.

  2. Use a “What’s in it for me?”, or WIIFM approach

You’ve rolled out the new technology but users aren’t fully using the feature set. Sound familiar?  Our experience in over 1,300 deployments shows that if you deliver messaging to your users with the WIIFM (What’s in it for me?) spin it will greatly improve end user adoption.  Which sounds better to you?

  3. “By using you’re our new skype for Business we will save the company money in travel!” - OR – “With Skype for Business video you’ll enjoy face to face meetings without the hassle of airport security lines or late night flights!”

Both statements are intended to drive use of video - but the “WIIFM” message is highlights a direct benefit for users, which leads to more personal interest in using the new solution. All communications, collateral, and training in your OCM approach should have a WIIFM context.

  4. Don’t take a “one-size fits all” approach to training

Invest in planning a diverse training offering that factors in different learning vehicles and content to reach all personalities in your organization.  Many times we find that our clients have spent 99% of their budget on the implementation and forget to factor in training! There is a fear factor with using new tools and savvy IT leaders recognize this element when delivering new technologies. Users want to know how to use new technologies - consider the administrative assistant to the President of your organization when changing your phone technology…. what happens if he or she starts dropping all of the calls because no one trained them? However, users learn in different ways and a holistic training plan with webinars, classroom sessions, and self-paced learning materials is key to ensure that no matter the preferred learning style, users have access to the training they need to be successful.

Managing change with new technologies is largely a matter of taking a step back, analyzing users and the impact of change, and applying common sense. However, we ask: Does your team have the time to create a comprehensive OCM program including communications, satisfaction surveys, training content, and training sessions? If not, we have the whole package ready for you! Our pre-created templates can easily be customized with your branding to ensure you adoption goes viral!

It’s never too early to start thinking about End User Adoption! Factoring this element in before you start will greatly increase your chances of a successful deployment and adoption – and happier colleagues!
